Birds at the Domaine

A visit to Domaine Joly-De Lotbinière will give you the opportunity to discover the great ornithological richness of our property that you will be able to see upon your arrival.

A Paradise for Ornithologists

« Haut lieu de l'horticulture et de l'arboriculture au Québec depuis plus d'un siècle et demi, ce domaine s'étend sur une des terrasses qui dominent le fleuve St-Laurent au lieu dit Pointe Platon, à une cinquantaine de kilomètres à l'ouest de la ville de Québec. La grande diversité d'habitats qui s'y trouve en fait un lieu de prédilection pour l'observation des oiseaux. »

(The domain is located on one of the terraces overlooking the St. Lawrence River at Pointe Platon, about 50 kilometres west of Quebec City. The great diversity of habitats found there makes it a favourite place for bird-watching.)

   - Christian Sommeillier, Saint-Nicolas

The abundance of food, the multiple sources of fresh water, of shelters, and a diversity of habitats explain why so many varieties of bird species can be observed at the Domaine.

As such, the presence of the northern oriole, the red cardinal, the ruby-throated hummingbird, warblers, thrushes, mockingbirds, sparrows, vireos and flycatchers, among others, is noteworthy.

The presence of a vast bulrush marsh and the proximity of the St. Lawrence River also allows the observation of several species of raptors (including bald eagles), waterfowl and shorebirds. Spring and fall migrations are particularly privileged times to observe them.

Domaine Joly-De Lotbinière, a recognized place for bird watching!
